About the Journal

Subscription Access
As a subscription-based journal, MJMBR typically asks readers to pay for their reading content. Since individuals or institutions have to pay subscription charges, only those who have purchased a subscription to the journal/have purchased an article will have access to the article. The journal wants the author to pay a fee for open-access publication. If the authors do not choose to pay, their paper will be published with the standard subscription-based access free of cost. Following a subscription-based model, copyrights for the published content are usually transferred to this journal. This means that for an article published in a subscription-based model, anybody who wishes to use any part of the paper will have to seek permission from the journal.

Hybrid Open Access Model
MJMBR is a subscription journal that offers an open-access publication for individual articles upon payment of an APC. It follows fee-based open-access options for individual articles (which are then known as hybrid open access). Hybrid open access is a publishing paradigm in which authors can make individual articles gold open access immediately after paying an article publication fee to subscription-based journals.

Copyright Retention
Typically, MJMBR retains the copyright of publication. When the papers get published, the copyright is transferred to this journal, so the published contents are the publisher’s property. Following the subscription-based model, MJMBR doesn’t legally permit sharing the article’s full text on the authors' website or a social network like ResearchGate.
However, following the hybrid open-access model, MJMBR may let authors retain the copyright on their articles under a Creative Commons license (CC BY-NC 4.0). The CC BY-NC 4.0 license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, although their new works must also acknowledge & be non-commercial.

Research Integrity
The option to publish the article as open access in the hybrid open access model is usually given after the article has passed peer review and been accepted for publication. So, all articles, whether or not they end up being open access, undergo the same rigorous scrutiny by the scientific community, which helps maintain article quality. Additionally, all the accepted articles undergo professional proofreading and typesetting by the journal's editorial team. This means that all quality control checks are the same for both regular subscription articles and those that end up being open access.

Anti-plagiarism Checking
All articles submitted to the Malaysian Journal of Medical and Biological Research are initially assessed (in-house screening) by Managing Editor for overall suitability for the journal. The originality check system from anti-plagiarism software screens all manuscripts for plagiarism. The managing editor will use Grammarly and Turnitin software to check the originality of submissions received. This screening system compares incoming submissions to an extensive database of academic content and alerts editors to any possible issues.

Article Processing Charge
This journal operates under subscription-based publishing, allowing the author to choose between traditional, subscription-based publishing, or the hybrid open-access model. Being subscription-based publishing, manuscripts require a "NO" Article Processing Charge (APC) and require authors to "TRANSFER" the copyright of the manuscript to MJMBR. Manuscripts are published behind a payment wall and must be purchased for use.

Open Access Publishing Offer
MJMBR offers the authors to publish their work as Hybrid Open Access. The journal allows authors to comply with their funder mandates by offering open access option. This is known as hybrid open access. MJMBR agrees to follow the requirements of the Jisc transformative journal. The journal demonstrates its commitment to transformation and transparency by meeting Jisc's agreed criteria. The hybrid option is only available post-acceptance of the article for publication. An Article Publishing Charge (APC) of US$ 200 is paid by the author (or on their behalf by their institution or funder). The open-access contents are unrestricted and free to view and download.
